"THE BOOK PROJECT" - 23rd Male' Scout Group

THE IDEA

From 2010, 23rd Male' Scout Group has been working on this project. As of now one pilot project has been carried out in Raa. Maakurathu, (where we have donated over 700 books) and 23rd Male' have obtained more books that will be used for 4 possible projects in the year 2013.

Below is the initial project outline we developed in 2010. Today we have improved on it and have incorporated many more components to it. However, the idea remains the same.

A short summary of how it works

As Rover Scouts it is important for the Young Adults involved to work for community development and support the society in every possible manner. The concept of this Book Project is to identify communities (Islands) in Maldives where schools do not have sufficient library resources and to provide and supply them with books and other reading materials. This will enrich the resources available in those school libraries and this contribution will produce a positive impact for the students who will use these materials for educational purpose.

Method and How?

23rd Male’ Open Rovers will launch a campaign asking the general public, NGOs and other community groups of Male’, Including Schools and civil societies to donate as many books and other reading material (Educational, story books etc …).

Every book or material that will be donated to this project will be registered, maintaining a proper system where every book and its donors are identified and recorded.

An online system will be established where the donor can access a web page where he can trace or locate the book he/she donated to the project using an index number, giving him/her the purpose and use that the book has found after it had been donated.

23rd Male’ will conduct a small seminar where library management skills will be taught to the Rovers involved in this project. (Input speakers who are experts in library management can be invited from Maldives National Library, and other institutions)

23rd Male’ will identify an Island community where there is need for library materials and resources giving priority to the most needed and to those schools in the Island where Scouting is functioning.

23rd Male’ will categorize and sort out the books that had been donated to the project accordingly and take the books and material to the identified Island School and hand over the material to the that particular School. Providing them with a book shelves etc… to maintain the library and if possible conduct a seminar on library management to the Scouts of who will be tasked to maintain and look after the books that had been donated.

Partnership and Money?

For any such project the main obstacle that we face is financial resources. On this particular project it is recommended to get partners and sponsors for the project to be successful and effective. Therefore its recommended to approach media corporations to get media partners that can promote and cover this project.

Also since this particular project is involved with schools its recommended to approach the Ministry of Education to become partners. Also there are several educational and youth NGOs that can be of assistance both financially and with material.
